Berean Bible Study

Overview

The Holy bible is a book of books. The individual books might be thought of as manuscripts or scrolls assembled into one book, with each part being related to the other parts. It is not like a collection of unrelated books by several authors, being published as one volume.

The Bible has two primary books each containing other books. The Old Testament was written before Jesus. The New Testament was written after Jesus.

There are different kinds of books in the Bible. There are history books. There are books of poetry, song, praise and sayings. There are books of prophecy. There books called gospels and epistles. Some are as short as 5 or 6 paragraphs.

However, the books are not exclusively of one kind. For example, history books can be prophetic, prophetic books can tell history.

Prophecy is a little like history in reverse, but it is not fortune telling or making predictions. Prophecy provides information around an event or events that can be used to determine if something has happened.

Each book has a name. The books originally did not have chapter and verse numbers. Some chapters can be as short as a couple of paragraphs. Some books are so small that they do not require chapters.

Particular passages or verses are identified and located in the Bible by this nomenclature. Book-name Chapter:Verse-Verse as in Genesis 1:3-31.

The books are arranged in an approximate chronological order of their historical application but there is considerable overlap. There are also certain passages that are intended to be cognitively inserted into other parts to provide greater detail.

The King James Version is used because it is proven. Just as there must be only one final authority, God, there must be only one authorized Bible. More

This Bible study begins with the book of John also called the Gospel of John or Saint John.

John was the youngest apostle chosen by Jesus and he lived the longest – the only apostle to die of natural causes.

When writing about himself he often used third person reference as the one “Jesus loved.”

John and Andrew were disciples of John the Baptist when he baptized Jesus and became disciples of Jesus.

John 1:1-9, King James Version

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name [was] John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all [men] through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but [was sent] to bear witness of that Light.
9 [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

This study begins with the Book of John because it applies to a time before Genesis 1:1. It begins before the beginning of creation.

It begins with the first cognizant thought of God’s self awareness, the word that means self, “I.” And Jesus was the Word, the “Am.”

Certain keywords have been identified for which reference passages are provided. Keywords are in italic.

These passages provide an overview of the nature of God which is helpful to understand before delving into the works of God in Genesis.

Be sure to at least read through these before proceeding to Genesis. Discussion of each particular verse is addressed in the Book that contains it.

All reference verses in King James Version (KJV) unless otherwise noted.

Luke 3:2-20

2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways [shall be] made smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to [our] father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. 12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? 13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. 14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse [any] falsely; and be content with your wages. 15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; 16 John answered, saying unto [them] all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: 17 Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. 18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

John 1:19,26,27,32-34,36

19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? 26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; 27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. 32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. 36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

John 3:26-36

26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all [men] come to him. 27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. 28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. 29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I [must] decrease. 31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. 32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. 33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. 34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure [unto him]. 35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. 36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 5:33-35

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. 34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. 35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
